Choosing the Kicks: Criteria and Peace of Mind
What were your non-negotiables?
The must-have was a hybrid. Since I was moving from New Zealand to Australia, I needed more space than my old Honda Fit. I wanted a reputable brand, a very good price, and low mileage, which the Kicks satisfied.
Why was a hybrid mandatory, and why did you avoid a full EV?
I already drive a hybrid, and I know hybrids are good. I avoided a full EV because Australia is new to me, and I was concerned about the charging infrastructure and not having a charging port at home. To be sure, I opted for another hybrid.
The Kicks is a parallel import not officially sold here. What gave you the confidence to purchase it?
I looked at reviews online, and they were quite good. Nissan is a very good brand. Finding insurance was a little bit harder, but securing coverage was a key factor in my decision. I’m a safe driver, so I’m not worried about part scarcity; the reviews confirm the car’s reliability.

For 40% job travel: Why the SUV over the hatchback like the Honda Fit?
I needed a bigger car for more space and to feel comfortable during the long drives my job requires, especially since I plan to drive up to Brisbane later in the year. I wanted an SUV size for a more comfortable experience on long drives.
How does the Kicks' size and handling work for you on Sydney’s narrow roads?
It is a good size, a definite upgrade from my previous car. It’s not too wide, which is important for finding parking on the narrow roads in Sydney. I also like that it’s easy to step into—I’m not “lifting myself up,” unlike some bigger SUVs.
What is your feedback on the visibility and safety features?
Being an SUV, it’s much taller, which improved visibility. This is great because bright lights from big cars behind me no longer shine directly into my eyes. I also appreciate the wide windscreen and the safety features, especially the back camera mirror.
How do you rate the e-power hybrid system and fuel efficiency?
The fuel capacity is good; I estimate a range of about 720 kilometers on a tank. I mainly drive in eco mode, which uses regenerative charging friction to help slow the car down so I don’t “even have to break” often. This adds an additional charge, helping it perform better.
Is the cargo area big enough for your clinical work materials and personal items?
Yes, the boot is sufficient. I can fit work items like a machine and monitors, as well as personal items like luggage and parcels after moving house. Unlike my Honda Fit, the Kicks is wide and deep enough to fit two pieces of luggage.

What are your friends and colleagues saying about the Kicks?
My colleagues noticed it was a nice car but were unfamiliar with it, asking if it was a Japanese import. One thought the price ($25,000 AUD) was cheap but worried about part scarcity. I told them I wasn’t worried, citing my safe driving record and the car’s reliability.

It’s a versatile car that’s not too small and not too big, making it suitable for both urban and long-distance driving.
